The Golf Rules: A Brief History

The earliest surviving written rules of golf were produced by the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith/Edinburgh over 26 days starting on March 7, 1744, for a tournament played on April 2, 1744. These new 13 rules were titled Articles and Laws in Playing at Golf. 

Fast Forward Hundreds of Years and Thousands of Golf Rules Later...

The Gentlemen Golfers of Golfjam would like to introduce OUR rules.

2.0.0.a - Play The Ball as it Lies OR as close to that as reasonably* possible.
    2.0.0.b - Mark, Lift, Clean, Replace is always allowed.
    2.0.0.c - All touching of "Balls In Play" must be performed AFTER marking location.
    2.0.0.d - All ball location marking must be located behind the ball on direct line away from the hole.
    2.0.0.e - Replacing of ball shall be directly in front of marker on direct line to hole, unless being replaced in a new location under our replacement location rules.
    2.0.0.f - If you are playing multiple balls from same location each additional ball must be placed directly behind the previous ball location on direct line away from hole. EXPLAINED: This will create a smaller divot line not multiple divots beside one another. This is one of our many great "Good Groundskeepers" rules.(GGR)


2.0.1.a - Play the course as you find it OR as close to that as reasonably* possible.
    2.0.1.b - Before moving any object on the course consider moving your ball first. With all of our penalty free ball replacement rules available to you, moving anything on the course should be a last resort option. (GGR)

2.0.3 - ALL ACCESS ALL AREAS REQUIRED.

2.1.0 - No more than ten [10] persons in a foursome.

    2.1.1 - No more than four caddies in foursome.

    2.1.2 - No more than two coaches in foursome.
    2.1.3 - No more than 3 spectators/camera operators OR security in foursome.
    2.1.4 - ALL ACCESS ALL AREAS REQUIRED.
    2.1.5 - ALL ACCESS ALL AREAS REQUIRED.
    2.1.6.a - Umbrella Personnel must not exceed quantity of playing participants.


2.2.0 - Driving range and practice putting green usage is forbidden before tournament rounds.
Penalty: Loss of breakfast ball.

EXPLAINED: These spaces are reserved for settling disputes/challenges post round. (Longest Drive, Longest Putt, Closest to Pin and/or OTHER* are examples of proper post round practice area usage)

   
2.2.1 - No practice putting before or after your putt(s) during tournament rounds. Penalty is DQ of hole for single player or team.
    2.2.2 - Utilizing organic material natural to the local course to help define the line of a putt is legal ONLY at one point along the line of putt line. #definetheline
    2.2.3 - ALL ACCESS ALL AREAS REQUIRED. 


2.3.0 - NO CLUB LIMIT. Bag weight limits apply.

EXPLAINED: The club limit of 14 clubs was recently added to the golf rules for the health of caddies. With this in mind, and being as rarely do our members employ caddies, we have removed this restriction with conditions.
    2.3.1 - NO BAG WEIGHT LIMIT if player is carrying own bag, either on self, on push/pull cart or on motorized cart.
    2.3.2 - Weight Limits must adhere in accordance with airline standards, wherein First Class allowance is 70 lbs./ 32kgs.

    2.3.3 - If player is not "First Classy" then 50 lbs./ 23 kgs.
    2.3.4 - If it is decided player is found in breach of Rule 2.3.2  or 2.3.3 beverage disbursements usually rectify the situation as over 90% of violations are caused by beverages being carried within the golf bag.


2.4.0 - Everyone gets a Breakfast Ball on the first tee.
(ALICE RULE)
    2.4.1 - Breakfast Ball not usable after a Fore Alert.
    2.4.2 - Forfeit of breakfast ball if player uses practice areas before tournament round.

    2.4.3 - ALL ACCESS ALL AREAS REQUIRED.


2.5.0 - Everyone pars the first hole unless one player in same foursome birdies mulligan free.
(ALICE RULE OR NICKO RULE: debatable*)
    2.5.1 - Breakfast Ball must be used on first three (3) holes. 
    2.5.2 - NO Rockstar Mulligan use during first three (3) holes.
    2.5.3 - NO Rockstar Mate Mulligan use during first six (6) holes.


2.6.0 - Practice swings with sand contact is illegal in bunkers. 2 Stroke Penalty.
    2.6.1 - Sand movement during swing before impact is allowed as long as ball is struck.
    2.6.2 - Only one (1) bunker mulligan is allowed per bunker.
    2.6.3 - ALWAYS RAKE YOUR BUNKERS.
    2.6.4 - ALL ACCESS ALL AREAS REQUIRED.

2.50.0 - Using the word "Provisional" is not a requirement when hitting a provisional.
    2.50.1 - "Back Up Ball", "Reload", "Another" or "Do-Over" are examples of acceptable word usage, be creative.
    2.50.1 - One (1) or more of your playing partners must be clear of your intention to hit a back up ball (provisional). A mulligan must be deducted from your OR your playing partners account if you do not make intentions clear.
    2.50.2 - In the event you play an illegal unannounced reload and ALSO do not have any mulligans in your account, a three stroke penalty will be assessed.



2.52.0 - ALL BALLS ALLOWED. Playing a set of various balls of different make, model and date of manufacture during tournament rounds is allowed.
    2.52.1 - Player is allowed to play different ball(s) while putting than that ball which is played throughout rest of each hole. Mark, Lift, Change, Replace.
    2.52.2 - ALL ACCESS ALL AREAS REQUIRED.
